But before we step inside, let’s take a moment to learn about the fascinating story behind this restaurant.
From Australia to the First Branch in Thailand
The journey of this yakiniku buffet restaurant began with its first location alongside a street in Perth, Australia, opening in 2015. The restaurant was established to serve and select high-quality Wagyu beef, allowing customers to savor the rich flavors of both Japanese and Australian Wagyu. It quickly became a popular spot for locals to enjoy delicious Wagyu dishes.
A year later, due to increasing demand, the restaurant opened a second branch in Willetton, located in the southern part of Perth. This expansion aimed to accommodate the growing number of customers eager to experience the exquisite taste of Wagyu beef. Today, the buffet features two locations: Gyu-En Japanese BBQ Yakiniku in Perth and GYU En DOS Japanese BBQ-Willetton in Willetton.
As 2024 rolled around, the restaurant made a significant decision to expand internationally, choosing to open its first overseas branch in Thailand. This new location aims to serve and offer high-quality Wagyu beef, allowing Thai customers to indulge in exceptional flavors right in the heart of one of the country’s busiest commercial districts. This branch not only represents a milestone for the restaurant but also marks its first international expansion, bringing the flavorful taste of Wagyu to a new audience.
Opening the First Branch in Thailand
As you approach the front of the restaurant, you’ll notice the prominent sign clearly marking the entrance. Despite being tucked away in a building, the sign stands out, making it easy to locate GYU EN SIAM YAKINIKU.
As you step inside the restaurant, you’ll notice the interior decor, which is simply styled yet elegant, distinguishing it from other establishments in the neighborhood.
The warm glow from the lamps in the evening creates a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, making the interior of the restaurant even more inviting to sit down and enjoy a meal.
Most of the seating consists of comfortable sofas, perfect for a relaxed dining experience after a shopping spree. The dining tables feature charcoal grills, equipped with built-in smoke extractors, so you don’t have to worry about lingering food odors. This setup allows guests to enjoy their yakiniku meal in a cozy environment while ensuring a pleasant atmosphere.
Menu Package Options
Let’s talk about the restaurant’s food menu! GYU EN SIAM YAKINIKU offers an All You Can Eat buffet format that allows diners to fully enjoy the flavors of Wagyu beef at their leisure. The menu is divided into five packages: the 399 Baht package, the 499 Baht package, the 699 Baht package, the 999 Baht package, and the 1,990 Baht package. Each package serves different selections of Wagyu and various dishes. All Wagyu served at the restaurant is of high quality, carefully selected, and imported from Japan, Australia, and the United States.
For the food menu package, we chose the 1,990 Baht option, which allows us to enjoy all the Wagyu and other dishes offered by the restaurant. Today, we had the opportunity to savor Wagyu A5 from both Japan and Australia.
Wagyu A5 Menu
Starting with the Wagyu A5 from Japan, the restaurant serves this premium beef in various cuts, including ribeye, which is offered in thinly sliced, thickly sliced, and diced forms. Guests have the option to request the chef to cut the Wagyu in their preferred style, allowing for a customized dining experience that caters to individual tastes. Each cut showcases the exceptional quality and marbling of the Wagyu A5, ensuring a delicious meal.
As we place the sliced Wagyu on the charcoal grill, the aroma of the beef combined with a subtle smokiness from the charcoal creates an irresistible scent. Once the Wagyu slices are perfectly grilled, we take a bite, experiencing the delicate tenderness of the thinly sliced beef. The rich flavor of the Wagyu melts in our mouth, creating a delightful sensation. Pairing it with the restaurant’s special dipping sauce enhances the taste even further, elevating the overall enjoyment of this premium beef experience.
Choosing the thickly sliced Wagyu provides a different yet equally delightful flavor and texture experience. When we grill the thick slices on the charcoal until they are perfectly cooked, and then take a bite, we can savor the richness of the beef. Chewing slowly allows our taste buds to fully appreciate the tender texture of the Wagyu and the concentrated flavor of the marbled fat melting in our mouth. Each bite offers a luxurious sensation, making it a memorable and indulgent dining experience.
For those who choose the diced Wagyu, the deliciousness is equally accessible. Not only can we grill the Wagyu to our preferred level of doneness, but we can also experience the thick, tender texture of the beef. Each bite offers a burst of rich flavor, fully saturating our palate with the concentrated taste of the Wagyu. It requires only a little effort to chew, allowing us to savor the exquisite qualities of this premium beef effortlessly.
Australian Ribeye Australian Loin
After enjoying the Wagyu A5 from Japan, we moved on to the Ausie Wagyu MB 8-9. The restaurant serves this premium Australian Wagyu in two cuts: loin and ribeye, both presented in thin slices. We decided to start with the ribeye. The rich marbling and robust flavor of the Australian Wagyu promise a delightful experience, showcasing the unique characteristics that differentiate it from its Japanese counterpart. Each bite of the ribeye highlights its tenderness and juiciness, making it a must-try for any meat lover.
Although the exterior of the Australian Wagyu ribeye may look similar to that of the Japanese Wagyu, a closer look reveals that the Australian ribeye has slightly less marbling. When we grill the Australian Wagyu ribeye to perfection and take a bite of the freshly grilled meat, we can savor the rich flavor of the Australian Wagyu as it gradually melts in our mouth.
When cut into thick slices, the Australian Wagyu Loin, which is grilled over charcoal, reveals its tender and juicy texture. Each bite offers an intense flavor of the Wagyu that bursts forth, making it perfect for those who enjoy the pure, concentrated taste of Australian beef. The thickness of the slices enhances the experience, allowing diners to fully appreciate the robust characteristics and richness that this premium meat has to offer.
The restaurant doesn’t only highlight Wagyu A5 from Japan and Australia; it also features another star menu item: Japanese beef tongue (Gyutan). The restaurant serves gyutan in various styles, including thinly sliced, thickly sliced, and as steak, allowing diners to choose their preferred preparation. Each option showcases the unique flavors and textures of the beef tongue, making it an exciting addition for those looking to explore beyond traditional cuts of beef.
Thinly sliced Gyutan Thickly sliced Gyutan Gyutan Steak
If you choose to have the Japanese beef tongue in the thinly sliced style and grill it over hot charcoal to your desired doneness, you’ll experience the tender, springy texture of the beef tongue with each bite. Squeezing some lemon juice over it enhances the flavor, making the beef tongue even more delicious and refreshing. The combination of the rich meat and the zesty acidity of the lemon creates a delightful taste experience that is both satisfying and invigorating.
If you choose to enjoy the Japanese beef tongue in either the thickly sliced or steak style, you’ll experience an even greater tenderness that bounces against your teeth. You can use kitchen scissors to cut any oversized pieces of beef tongue into more manageable bites, allowing you to fully savor the deliciousness of the beef tongue in just the right portions. This way, each bite offers a delightful experience of flavor and texture.
If anyone wants to experience the ultimate in rich flavor, the restaurant also offers Yukhoe, a dish featuring raw wagyu beef topped with a raw egg yolk. This dish is perfect for those who love wagyu and want to savor the intense taste of raw beef.
